From time to time, celebrities make statements that leave the internet angry and disgusted. And, recently, Salman Khan made one such statement that angered many netizens.
In a recent interview, Palak revealed that Salman instructed all the women on the set of his movie ‘Antim’ to avoid wearing low, plunging necklines and instead be properly covered up. During the interview, she said, “When I was AD-ing with Salman sir on Antim, I don’t think many people know this, Salman Sir had a rule ki ‘koi bhi ladki mere set pe, neckline should be here (for every girl on my set, the neckline should be here (high up)), all the girls should be covered, like good proper girls’.”
In no time, Palak’s statement went viral, and many trolled Salman Khan for his double standards with regard to female attire on his film sets and in his movies. Later, she clarified, “It’s really been misunderstood. All I wanted to say is that I have put certain guidelines for myself as to how to dress around people who are way senior to me, who have I pretty much grown up idolising. Salman sir is of course one of them.”
And, now Salman Khan addresses the neckline remark in a recent interview. In an interview, Salman Khan addressed allegations of having a “double standard” when it comes to female clothing on his film sets. He stated that he believes women’s bodies are more valuable and should be covered up. He also attributed the issue to men and their tendency to objectify women.
During his recent show Aap Ki Adalat, Rajat Sharma accused Salman of having a ‘double standard’. To this Salman said, “Jab aap ek decent picture banate ho toh sab jaake dekhte hai poore parivaar ke saath. Koi double standard nahi hai. I think aurato ki jo bodies hai, woh kahi zyada precious hai. Toh woh jitni dhaki huyi hongi mujhe lagta hai ki better hai (When you make a decent picture everyone goes to watch it with their family. There is no double standard. I think women’s bodies are more precious. So the more covered they are, the better it will be I feel).”
He further added,“Yeh ladkiyon ka chakkar nahi hai yeh ladko ka chakkar hai. Jis hisaab se ladke ladkiyon ko dekhte hai, aapki behene, aapki biwio ko, aapki maao ko. Woh mujhe accha nahi lagta, I don’t want them to go through this. (The problem isn’t with women but with men. The way men stare at women, your sister, your wife, your mother. I don’t like that).”
After Salman made the statement, the internet was filled with anger as many accused him of objectifying women in his movie songs. Others criticized his regressive thinking, stating that he should focus on teaching men to respect women rather than asking women to cover up.
Here’s how people reacted:
One user wrote, “Weren’t Munni Badnam and Fevicol Se from his own home productions what a jackass.” Other user said, “He could have literally saved himself by saying he just wanted a professional like environment/attire on the set for both men and women. But this is straight up making a stupid statement thinking he’s said something different Lol. Are we surprised tho? Sadly a lot of his fans will eat it up and think he’s great for being so pRoTeCtIvE”
Someone wrote, “His fans will also impose this ‘covering up’ on women around him. What an Idiot!” Another netizen wrote, “Also, the way men look at women..teach the men how to respect women..instead of covering them up.” A user wrote, “I hate this. And the fact is all of us know his opinion is the majority opinion that people have, not only here but all over the world. The freaking policing of women is a nightmare.”
A user wrote, “Shut up bhoi. Why don’t you ask men to cover their eyes ? Let women wear what they want.” Someone wrote, “Yuck. He needs to educate himself. There was an exhibition that displayed clothes of rape victims and it only consisted of conservative clothes. It’s high time people realise sexual harassment happens because of HARASSERS and not because of clothing.”
Someone wrote, “Teach your brothers, fathers, sons, and nephews not to be objectifying vultures. Don’t put the onus on only women. It’s like saying, if you don’t want to be robbed, don’t have money.”A netizen wrote, “As if the attire has ever even mattered. Tell all the men to stay indoors instead.”
“Uncle wali vibes dena suru kr diya hain… Aur Haa 100 chuhe khaa ke billi chali hazz pe.”, wrote a user. Someone mentioned, “Aur kuch? Kaam karna bhi band kar de ab? Ghunghat daal kar baith jaaye ghar par just like all times because our body is precious.“ Another person wrote, “It’s always going to be funny how the onus is always on women but not on men.”
