Netizens gasped collectively last night as many stared at a piece of breaking news they never wished to see: “Singer KK, 53, passed away in Kolkata after a live performance.” And, for a moment, many of us couldn’t believe the voice behind iconic songs like Tadap Tadap, Aankhon Mein Teri, Dola Re Dola, and Tu Hi Meri Shab Hai is no more.
KK’s Sudden Death Feels So Personal To Many
Many of us broke into tears as this loss felt so personal. And, the reason being KK wasn’t just a Bollywood playback singer. He was our life guide, who taught us what love is; what friendship is! When our hearts broke, he was there for us. Our parents might not have understood the pain of our broken hearts, but he surely did.
In times, when we were lonely and heartbroken, his songs gave us that no one else could-“Sukoon”!
No school or college farewell was complete without playing – Yaaron Dosti Badi Hi Haseen Hai and Yaad Aayenge Pal, which became farewell anthems. No breakup felt real without playing Tadap Tadap on loop. No dance party was successful without blasting Dus Bahane on full volume. No love story felt real without the song “Tu Hi Meri Shabb Hai” or “Khudda Jaane”.
KK’s song made us feel that he knew us even better than our family and friends. So, for us, it’s not just a talented singer, who died. It’s a friend, a family member, a guide, a mentor, or a therapist – who died. For many of us, KK’s death feels like a personal loss.
For many of us, especially 90s kids, this is the end of an era. Hence, many just couldn’t contain their feelings and pour them over the internet. From celebs to fans, many came forward to share how broken they are today!

KK went on validating the hollowness of the emotions we felt through phases of adolescence. Now the same songs & emotions will make it so difficult to heal from this loss.Unrequited love, farewell to schoolmates, special moments gone by will have more than one reason to cry for.

KK’s voice was a coming of age for so many 90s kids. We sang Yaaron at school farewells, casually played Kya Mujhe Pyaar Hai when we hung out with our crushes, daydreamed about the people we loved with Ajab Si, and tripped over our own hearts with Khuda Jaane. All to his voice.
