No one can deny that the Diwali holiday is one of the finest times for moviemakers to release their movies. With the festive atmosphere and a long weekend, many people tend to seek opportunities to have fun filled time with their friends and family. And, that’s the reason why there are many producers who tend to book the Diwali weekend in advance to release their films. But, sadly, there are some Diwali releases that turned into a disaster rather than minting gold at the box office.
As the two movies – Ram Setu and Good News are this year’s Diwali release, here’s a look at the Bollywood movies that hit the theatres during Diwali but were completely rejected by the audience.
Jaan-E-Mann (2006)
Multi-starrer Diwali release that turned out to be a huge disaster is Jaan-e-mann. The movie featured Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, and Preity Zinta in the lead roles. The movie clashed with Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra’s Don in 2006 on Diwali. Though Don turned out to be a massive hit, Jaan-E-Mann failed miserably at the box office.
Saawariya (2007)
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya, is another Diwali release that turned out to be a disaster. The overhyped debut film of Sonam and Ranbir Kapoor was nothing more than a snoozefest. Though the leading actors went on to build impressive careers, the romantic movie was a commercial failure.
Blue (2009)
While Blue was India’s first underwater thriller, many were excited about the movie. But, the much-hyped movie left everyone shocked when it received negative responses from critics as well as the audience. The over-hyped thriller tanked miserably at the box office.
Main Aur Mrs. Khanna (2009)
Diwali weekend in 2009 saw the clash of three superstars. Akshay Kumar’s Blue clashed with Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor’s Main Aur Mrs. Khanna and Ajay Devgn’s All The Best. Unfortunately, only All The Best became successful at the box office. Even after having superstars like Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor, Main Aur Mrs. Khanna was rejected by the audience.
Action Replayy (2010)
Many had huge expectations from Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai starrer Action Replay. Action Replay is a juvenile attempt to recreate Hollywood’s superhit movie Back To The Future. After watching this movie, many were left wondering why actors like Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan signed this film. The film literally had no script and bored us to death in the name of mindless comedy.
Thugs of Hindostan (2018)
With the IMDb rating of 4.1, the movie stars Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif, and Amitabh Bachchan in the lead roles. The movie was released during Diwali week and everyone expected it to be a mega-blockbuster. But, the unfortunate ones, who watched the movie, would agree that it shouldn’t have been made in the first place. Though the filmmakers had created a huge hype around the film, the movie proved a disaster at the box office, leaving the audience disappointed. This movie is a reminder that even after a good star cast, a ship can sink if the script is poor.
