We’ve all grown tired of Bollywood’s troubling trend of misrepresenting the “real man” or “alpha” as excessively dominant or violent; someone who seeks to control women to prove his masculinity; someone who throws tantrums, breaks laws, and doesn’t shy away from wrongdoing.
What’s even more disturbing is how recent Bollywood movies conveniently overlook the true alphas who have been present all around us in real life. These movies have done a disservice to many real men in our lives – our supportive husbands, caring fathers, and respectful sons who understand that genuine strength comes from mutual respect and equality.
But thankfully, amidst this ugly trend, Bollywood finally delivered a genuine alpha figure, one who embodies the values of the supportive men in our lives. Yes, you guessed it – we’re referring to Deepak from Laapata Ladies!
In no time, Deepak from Laapataa Ladies garnered love from millions and became one of the most favorite male characters of all time. And, we are not surprised at all. The reason he earned so much love and popularity is because he reminded us of those men in our lives who don’t shy away from being a supportive and loving partner.
Men like Deepak smashed the stereotype that all men tend to control women. They remind us of our supportive fathers, husbands, brothers, and sons – who know a treating women as equals doesn’t make them any less.
Deepak is the real alpha who has shown exemplified strength and courage. How he refuses to give up his hope of finding his lost wife. He runs from post to post to find his bride without caring what people have to say about the whole episode. The only thing that worries him is how his wife would be all alone.
Rather than regressive alpha men of Bollywood who crack regressive jokes on women with their boy club, Deepak didn’t shy away from taking a stand against his friend for saying things that demean women.
Deepak might not be a macho 6 abs gym boy but he understands how to respect any woman – be it his wife or a complete stranger. Remember how he was not only worried about Phool but also making sure Jaya meets her family – sound and safe.
Deepak might not be a macho man holding guns and shooting anyone who says anything against his will and fancy but he is a man who is courageous enough to show his vulnerability and emotions. in front of society that tells men that emotions make them weak!
Deepak might not be Bollywood’s alpha who doesn’t shy away from crossing the lines and doing wrong things to get what he wants rather he is a man who is not ready to give up on goodness – no matter what. He may not be very educated or couldn’t speak English properly but knows the basic difference between what’s right and wrong – what many Bollywood alpha forget!
