We’re always complaining about the terrible movies that Bollywood churns out, right? I mean, as audience, we’re constantly bashing them for serving up regressive storylines and mind-numbing plots. And yet, what happens? These very movies end up raking in massive collections at the box office, many times crossing the 100 crore marks and sometimes crossing the 500 crore mark and beyond. It’s like a never-ending cycle of disappointment and disbelief.
And you know what’s even more baffling? When a film like “Laapataa Ladies” comes along, one that ticks all the right boxes and offers a refreshing change from the usual fare, what do we do? We give it a miss at the theaters, opting instead for the same old formulaic blockbusters that we claim to detest.
Despite receiving glowing reviews from the audience for its talented star cast, Kiran Rao’s intelligent direction, inspiring dialogues, socially relevant message, and feel-good factor, “Laapataa Ladies” only managed to earn under INR 25 crores at the box office. And that right there is where the hypocrisy lies.

It’s a baffling contradiction, to say the least. Here we have a movie that embodies everything we say we want from Bollywood – meaningful storytelling, stellar performances, and a positive social message – and yet, it struggles to make a mark at the box office.
So, what does this tell us about us – the audience? Well, it’s a stark reminder of our selective outrage and our tendency to say one thing and do another. We demand better quality cinema, but when it’s right in front of us, we fail to support it.
Kiran Rao and her team poured their hearts and souls into “Laapataa Ladies,” and yet, despite all their efforts, the film’s box office numbers deserved better. It’s a sobering realization that perhaps we need to reevaluate our choices as audience members.

If we truly want Bollywood to move away from regressive tropes and embrace more meaningful storytelling, then we need to start backing up our words with actions. It’s time to support films like “Laapataa Ladies” – ones that challenge the status quo and offer a fresh perspective on cinema.
In the end, the box office collection of “Laapataa Ladies” serves as a glaring reminder of the hypocrisy that plagues the Indian audience. It’s high time we start practicing what we preach and give deserving films the recognition and support they rightfully deserve.
