Anand Gandhi’s controversial tweet on Kantara Vs. Tumbbad
Since the day of its release, Kantara has been compared with the 2018 release Tumbbad. While both movies are based on folk tales, Tumbbad’s creative director has shared his views about the comparison. Anand Gandhi recently wrote on social media, “Kantara is nothing like Tumbbad. My idea behind Tumbbad was to use the horror as an allegory of toxic masculinity and parochialism. Kantara is a celebration of these (sic).”

Kantara is a celebration of these.
In no time, Gandhi’s tweet went viral. Many netizens came forward to share their views about Kantara and Tumbbad. While some mentioned that Tumbbad is a better movie, many shared that Kantara was actually a better one.
Here’s what Internet had to say about ‘Kantara vs. Tumbbad: Which Is better?’
Kantara is very mediocre compare to Tumbbad. Kantara worked on box office mainly due to religious angle & patriarchal masculinity.

So true! Glad you called out the blatant sexism and portrayal of toxic masculinity in the movie.

Btw, eagerly waiting for Tumbbad part 2.
Those who will understand the films will understand this as well. Your work was in a different league altogether.

Tumbbad was one of its kind cinematic experience!! Comparing Kantara is an insult to the masterpiece that Tumbbad was. https://t.co/SI60N4YVkx

the internet was going crazy about it but feels less awkward to say now that Kantara was SUCH. A. PAINFUL. WATCH. 🤮 https://t.co/SZrZttXENj

Kantara is toxic in so many levels… it glorifies toxic masculinity, harassment of women, physical violence against women, abusive parent-child relationships, substance abuse, cultural appropriation… it also lacks depth or flavour in its characters. Truly overrated movie! https://t.co/SExLbh0ZhO

Some also came in support of Kantara too:
Kantara depicts the journey from debauchery to enlightenment, the nativism playing an enabling role. Tumbbad is the exact opposite- a glorification of debauchery and stereotyping of the natives.

You’re right – Kantara is nothing like Tumbbad.
I think you and I watched different films. Kantara does not celebrate toxic masculinity. Spoiler alert, the hero dies in the climax. With him dies all his shortcomings. What comes back is the Daiva shakti, the spirit of the forest, protector of the village.

They want a movie based in a Karnataka village in 1990 to preach about 4th wave feminism, LGBTQIAMAP equality and Quantum physics

Tumbadd movie supports greed lust and desires…whereas kantara supports divinity, culture, god, spirituality and devotion
