2022 wasn’t a great year for Bollywood. There were many big-budgeted, star-studded movies that fail to create magic at the box office. From Ranbir Kapoor’s Shamshera to Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha, there were many Bollywood movies that failed to make money at the box office.
There were very few movies like Kashmir files or Gangubai Kathiawadi, that did great in theatres as well as on digital platforms. Unfortunately, there were many movies that were expected to set records that ended up becoming the biggest disaster of 2022.
Many blamed inflation, theatre ticket prices, and easy access to OTT platforms for the failure of these movies. But, the lack-lustrous performance of these movies on OTT is just an indication of the content quality. People not showering love on these movies, even after being available on OTT, show why we need to create better content.
Here are 5 movies that were expected to set records but turned into the biggest disaster of 2022
1. Bachchhan Pandey (Prime Video)
Made on a massive budget of INR 180 Crores, the movie managed to earn only INR 73 Crores. The movie not only failed to get the audience to the theatres but also, failed on OTT to engage the audience. One thing that the movie definitely lacked was ENTERTAINMENT. With a lousy screenplay, the movie managed to entertain in pieces but failed to deliver on the hype that it created.
2. Dhaakad (Zee5)
Kangana’s “Dhaakad” made on a huge budget of 85 crores turned into a disaster at the box office and collected only 2.58 crores in its lifetime. The movie’s flop verdict sent shockwaves within the industry. Unfortunately, even with its OTT release, the movie failed to win over the audience and create any magic.
3. Samrat Prithviraj (Amazon Prime Video)
With back-to-back failures, Akshay Kumar is having a miserable year. Akshay Kumar’s Samrat Prithviraj was made on a massive budget of INR 175 Crores. Unfortunately, the movie just managed to earn INR 90 Crores. The movie was heavily criticized for its wrong casting, incorrect facts, and multiple blunders. When the movie was released on Prime Video, it once again failed to touch the audience.
4. Shamshera (Amazon Prime Video)
Ranbir’s big-budget movie – Shamshera failed miserably at the box office. Due to the lousy screenplay and horrible VFX, the historical drama was so terrible that many compared it with Thugs of Hindustan. Netizens even called out the makers for the goof-ups and blunders. The movie’s OTT’s lack-lustrous performance is just another indicator of how terrible the movie was.
5. Raksha Bandhan (Zee5)
Akshay Kumar’s last few films such as Bachchan Pandey, Samrat Prithviraj, and Raksha Bandhan registered dismal performances at the ticket window. During an event, the actor opened up about the poor performances of his films. He took the blame on himself. While talking about his failures, he said, “Films are not working, it is our fault, my fault. I have to make the changes and understand what the audience wants. I want to dismantle the way I think and what kind of films I should do. Nobody should be blamed for it but me,”. Raksha Bandhan, not only failed in theatres but also failed to create traction with its OTT debut on Zee5.
We hope 2023 would bring better times for Bollywood and it could deliver the entertainers that it used to!
