In the times of Tinder and hook-ups, the blissful feeling of eternal love is becoming extinct with every passing day. Gone are the days, when we had love stories like Veer Zaara and Devdas – the love stories that connected with our hearts and souls.
With the changing times, Bollywood movies have changed too. The industry that gave us Veer Zaara once now endorses adultery as a form of modern love. Remember Gehraiyaan? While many may argue that with changing times, the audience’s taste has changed, and so is the concept of love in movies. But, they may not be entirely right. And, the success of the Telugu film, Sita Ramam is living proof of the same.
Hanu Raghavapudi’s old-world romantic love story Sita Ramam is like a warm hug of life that has endearing performances by Dulquer Salmaan and Mrunal Thakur. And, that’s the reason why despite the post-pandemic slackening viewership, Sita Ramam, turned into a massive hit.
The movie’s success has taken away all our skepticism about audience interest in an eternal love story.
Partially inspired by Yash Chopra’s cross-border love story Veer-Zaara, Sita Ramam tells the epic tale of true love surviving the war, cross-border suspicion, and the religious divide.
And, like many true love stories – be it Romeo & Juliet or Devdas – Â there is no happy ending. Though the couple in Sita Ramam has many memorable moments together, destiny had different plans for them.
The movie takes the audience through two timelines – 1964 and 1984. The movie makes an attempt to solve the mystery around its protagonists, Sita Mahalakshmi and Lt. Ram. To deliver a letter that Ram has written for Sita, 20 years ago, Afreen, a student of Pakistani descent travels from London to India. Balaji, a college senior who is presently in Hyderabad, assists her in delivering the letter to Sita.
With a heart-touching storyline and sincere performances, the movie manages to evoke all the right emotions. The makers have fleshed the plot so nicely that it keeps you engaged throughout the movie. What people loved the most was the fact that makers created it on the premise that humanity wins over any conflict, boundaries, and religion.
Sita Ramam is a beautiful love story with unexpected surprises at every turn. And, while it may not be a big-budget multi-starrer but it will surely have you on the edge of your seats the entire time.
No one can deny that Bollywood has stopped making such heartwarming love stories. But, we hope Bollywood would learn from Sita Ramam and give us a simple love story that touches our souls.
