While we criticize Bollywood for delivering low-quality or disappointing content, it’s disheartening to see that in 2023, several terrible movies made significantly more money at the box office than their good counterparts. Here are some terrible movies that made more money than good movies reminding us that mediocrity sells:
Terrible Movies Made Way More Money Than Good Films In 2023
1. Animal vs. 12th Fail
Animal: INR 537 Crores | 12th Fail: INR 52 Crores
The toxic masculine saga ‘Animal,’ with its poorly written storyline and misogynistic dialogues, earned a staggering INR 537 crores. In contrast, the inspiring biographical drama ’12th Fail,’ based on the real-life story of Manoj Kumar Sharma’s journey from extreme poverty to the Indian Police Service, earned a modest INR 52 crores.
2. Jawan vs. Sam Bahadur
Jawan: INR 640 Crores | Sam Bahadur: INR 85 Crores
‘Jawan,’ based on a fictional army hero, despite wasting considerable talent and potential, surpassed the earnings of the well-crafted biographical drama ‘Sam Bahadur,’ portraying one of the greatest real-life jawans – Sam Maneskshaw. While Jawan earned INR 640 crores, Sam Bahadur has earned INR 85 crores.
3. Pathaan vs. Dunki
Pathaan: INR 543 Crores | Dunki: INR 189 Crores
SRK’s underwhelming spy thriller ‘Pathaan,’ riddled with loopholes and resembling a video game, outperformed ‘Dunki,’ a poignant social drama depicting the struggles of illegal immigrants seeking a better life. While Jawan earned INR 543 crores, Dunki has earned INR 189 crores.
4. Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani vs. Mission Raniganj
Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani: INR 153.30 Crores | Mission Raniganj: INR 31 Crores
Karan Johar’s exaggerated family drama ‘Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani,’ laden with issues and lacking the usual Johar magic, amassed INR 153.30 crores, while ‘Mission Raniganj,’ based on a real-life rescue mission, only made INR 31 crores.
5. Gadar 2 vs Mrs. Chatterjee vs. Norway
Gadar 2: INR 525 Crores | Mrs. Chatterjee vs. Norway: INR 19.25 Crores
‘Gadar 2,’ featuring Sunny Deol and offering nothing new, focused on a father’s attempt to rescue his son from Pakistan, raking in INR 525 crores.
