Sudipto Sen’s directorial masterpiece, “The Kerala Story,” has emerged as one of the biggest blockbusters of 2023, garnering immense success at the box office. Starring the talented Adah Sharma, the film shattered numerous records, captivating audiences with its thought-provoking narrative.
However, it hasn’t been a smooth journey for “The Kerala Story,” as it faced scrutiny and controversy for its bold portrayal of sensitive subjects like religious conversions, ISIS, and love jihad. The film’s release initially faced a ban in West Bengal, and several theaters in Tamil Nadu declined to screen it, intensifying the challenges it faced.
Despite the challenges, the movie broke multiple records. In a stunning turn of events, Adah Sharma starrer achieved a remarkable milestone as it became the highest-grossing female-centric Indian movie of all time, Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi and Kangana Ranaut’s Manikarnika.
Despite the film’s resounding success in theaters, the makers of “The Kerala Story” are now encountering a new hurdle in their quest for an Over-The-Top (OTT) platform to showcase their movie. Sudipto Sen, the director, expressed his disappointment, revealing that they have been struggling to find a suitable OTT buyer for the film.
As per reports from Bollywood Hungama, the film has yet to receive any favorable response from potential streaming platforms, leaving the team in a state of uncertainty.
“We still haven’t got a suitable offer from any OTT platform for The Kerala Story,” said Sudipto, adding, “We are still waiting for a good workable deal from any of the main OTT platforms. But so far, we have not got any offer worth considering. It seems the film industry has ganged up to punish us.”
But punishment for what? Sudipto said, “Our box office success has irked many sections of the film industry. We have a feeling that a section of the entertainment industry has united to punish us for our success.”
“The Kerala Story,” which hit the screens on May 5, captivated audiences with its gripping exploration of religious conversions, ISIS, and other contentious subjects. Its controversial theme became a major talking point, contributing to its box office triumph. However, the search for an OTT platform willing to embrace this bold and compelling narrative continues, raising questions about the dynamics of the industry. What do you think?
