Women are changing the course of new India. Some of them are changing it while sitting in the boardrooms and some of them from their homes.
Indian society for long has let women suffer in silence when their drunk husbands would beat them or abuse them verbally.
But, it seems that women are tired of their sufferings and trying hard to find their voice to fight against domestic abuse.
Recently, a 41-year-old woman in Gujarat, tired of her husband coming home in a drunk state and abusing her, finally stood for her dignity.
As per the complaint filed by the Aarti Jani, she mentioned that
“My husband came home drunk on Tuesday evening and started quarrelling with me. Late in the night, my son, Rushi came home and asked my husband to stop blabbering or else he would call up the police.”
She further added,
“But as my husband kept blabbering in an inebriated condition, my son called up the police after which cops came to our house and started a legal procedure.”
In order to ensure the legal proceedings are completed, two punch witnesses were also called to smell Dhiren Jani’s mouth to confirm that he was drunk.
Dhiren has been booked under Section 66(1) B of the Gujarat Prohibition Act (consuming liquor without a permit).
Sadly, this section isn’t applicable in many states of India. If it would have been, then so many families would have been protected from suffering at the hands of alcoholism.
We are celebrating Aarti’s courageous act because, like many others, she always had a choice to keep quiet and suffer.
But, she chose not to. With the support of her son, she managed to stand for her dignity inspiring many others who choose to suffer in silence.
We don’t only need stricter laws but also courageous women who are not scared, to fight against the menace of alcohol abuse.
