Recently, when Kamala Harris became the United States’ first woman Vice-President, many took to social media to celebrate this great milestone. It is definitely a great achievement and no one could deny it. But, when some people started using this moment to the verge of over-obsession, they took away the charm from this great milestone. And, one such person is Barkha Dutt.
Recently, netizens slammed Barkha Dutt when she used an example of Kamala Harris’ husband to shame Indian men for being insecure about their wives’ success. She shared Kamala Harris’ husband picture with the caption:
“Please show me the Indian Man who’d be secure enough to be this man.”

To which, many netizens came forward to let her know that all Indian men are not the same.
They shared some really powerful examples of supportive Indian husbands, who have been the wind under their wives’ wings. The list included husbands of famous people to husbands of common women, who have thrived in their careers because of the support of their husbands.

Every husband whose wife has been a frontline worker in these times has been extremely proud. I know how anxious my wife was whole going for her hospital duty everyday. And that is a far bigger cause to be proud.

Some netizens shared powerful examples of Supportive Indian Husband from their own personal lives:
My husband who is a Doctor himself has been my plinth of support and has encouraged me all along. But he doesn’t go about to propagate it on Social Media. pic.twitter.com/T21qYJAv0N

@governorswaraj , my husband, my brother, a lot of my friends & some acquaintances! Why are you running Indian men down? Why this unwarranted dissing of a country which had a powerful woman as PM in 1966! It’s not OUR fault the US is backward & hasn’t yet had a woman at the top!

I can give you plenty of examples Barkha of Indian men who embrace and support their wives’ achievements.

I have achieved lot more than I could have every dreamt of and I owe much of it to my husband who always, always supported me, and is more proud of me that I am of myself.
My brother in law who supports my sister in completing her third degree. My cousins husband who supports her by working from home, so she can go in person. My husband who supports me n thinks of me as his equal. My sister in law’s husband who tells her to study instead of cook.

This is such a condescending remark! My husband left his job, moved with me back to India and stayed home to take care of our child. I don’t think nationality has anything to do with how individuals are. Patriarchy is everywhere. It also boils down to how well we women negotiate!

Here you go @BDUTT. Meet @subhadipbiswas. He has been by my side – as secure as it gets. Even if it meant leaving his work and moving to a new country to support me during my #ChancellorFellowship so I could represent my country.

On another note, women in the US find it way more difficult to break free, than in India..

At IFORHER, we believe we can’t blind ourselves that there are quite a lot of supportive husbands, who are trying to shatter the patriarchal norms. So rather than stereotyping and shaming all Indian Men, it would be better to applaud these real heroes who are neither insecure nor unsupportive of their wives’ success and career aspiration!
