Like many people stuck in lockdown, I tried to find some comfort in watching some Indian movies. And while watching “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” after such a long time, I woke up to a realization that spoilt one of the favorite movies forever.
It breaks my heart to tell you that Kuch Kuch Hota Hai wasn’t a romantic movie at all. It was a tragedy as Anjali made the biggest mistake of her life by choosing Rahul (Sharukh Khan) over Aman (Salman Khan). Here’s a list of the reasons why I would have never chosen Rahul as a life partner if I was Anjali.
1. Rahul Wasn’t Even A Good Friend
Rahul was so fixated about his own self-interests, that he never cared about Anjali’s emotions. From cheating in the game of basketball to making fun of her individuality and looks, Rahul didn’t even qualify to be a friend. Leave aside choosing him to be a partner.
At various points in the movie, I felt it was always Anjali, who cared too much or gave too much in the relationship. While Anjali was a loyal friend, Rahul never gave Anjali the amount of care she deserved.
2. Rahul Was Immature With Flawed Understanding Of Love & Marriage
“Pyaar Ek Baar Hota Hai Aur Shaadi Bhi” exposes his flawed understanding of love as well as marriage. After hearing those words, I wonder why Anjali never ran away from Rahul. Because I would have.
At multiple instances, Rahul promoted Love Is Friendship. But when he chose a girl based on her looks over his own best friend, you tend to question his maturity?
3. Rahul Started Ignoring Anjali After Tina Came Into His Life
It shows a lot about a man when he suddenly starts ignoring you at the arrival of another girl. How a long term friendship suddenly changed in a few days at the arrival of Tina. It breaks my heart when Anjali chose Rahul over Aman as she forgets how he ignored her during the lectures or during the college fest, just because he was interested in another girl. A good friend never ignores a friend over a love prospect.
4. Rahul Mocks Anjali In Front Of The College
One scene that absolutely broke my heart is when Anjali dresses up for Rahul. But, rather than appreciating or supporting his ‘best’ friend, he joins the mocking club. He makes fun of her and embarrasses her in a way that no friend would ever do.
5. Rahul Was A Sexist
Did you realize how sexist Rahul was when he made his signature dialogue – “Ladkiyan Basketball Nahi Khel Sakti”. How could a sexist character like Rahul ever be a good life partner?
6. Aman loved Anjali & He Didn’t Shy Away From Expressing It
A short glimpse in this character, and you know he is madly in love with Anjali. From missing her when Anjali leaves for summer camp to spending time with Anjali’s mother when she isn’t around, I fail to understand how Anjali could choose Rahul over Aman.
7. Aman Complements Anjali, Even When She Isn’t Around
Even when Anjali isn’t around, you could see how Aman still praised Anjali in front of another man as he says “Meri Anjali tumhari Anjali se zyada khoobsurat hai.” Who doesn’t want a man like Aman in their lives?
8. Aman Gave The Best Surprises
Who doesn’t love surprises? Aman surprises Anjali by going to the summer camp. On the other hand, Rahul never kept a check on Anjali once she went on that train giving Tina her red dupatta. How could you still choose Rahul?
9. Aman Accepted Anjali’s Choice
Rather than bogging Anjali down with societal pressure and commitments, it is heartwarming how Aman opens himself to Anjali’s decision to marry Rahul. In front of all his relatives and friends, doesn’t bat an eyelid when Anjali runs to Rahul.
Dear Anjali, I am sorry but marrying Rahul was the worst decision ever.
Anjali choosing a sexist, self-centered man over loving and caring Aman is one of the worst representations of a woman choosing the wrong guy over the right one. It is heartbreaking how our Bollywood showcases sexist toxic characters as heroes.
Be it Kabir Singh or Rahul, Bollywood is the worst preacher of true love.
