This power couple was not very popular in their early days. But slowly and gradually, supporting each other at every step, they created a place in history!
While Barack became one of the most loved presidents of the USA, Michelle became the Vice President for Community and External Affairs at the University of Chicago Hospitals.
Their Amazing Journey
It all started in 1989 when Michelle & Obama were studying law. Michelle was assigned the task of mentoring Obama at the Sidley & Austin Law firm, Chicago. She was working as an advisor while Obama was a student.
Obama fell in love with Michelle at first sight. He expressed his emotions as ~
“I remember being struck by how tall and beautiful she was…she, I have since learned, was pleasantly surprised to see that my nose and ears weren’t quite as enormous as they looked in the photo I’d submitted for the firm directory.”
They had their first date after a month. They first had their lunch at the Art Institute of Chicago, went for a stroll, and then watched the Spike Lee film, ‘Do The Right Thing.’ The date ended with an ice-cream and their first kiss. Michelle was impressed with Obama and expressed her date as~
“He showed all his side – he was hip, cutting edge, cultural, sensitive. The fountain- nice touch. The walk – patient.”
Don’t you think this date just sounds perfect – simple yet so special?
Slowly and gradually their relationship got more serious, intense, full of gratitude, love, and respect.
One night when the couple was celebrating the success of Obama’s clearing his Bar exam, he came up with something romantic. He ordered dessert and asked the waiter to place a ring beside the dessert and proposed Michelle. For Michelle, it just came out of the syllabus!

Michelle Obama and Barack Obama got engaged in 1991 and married a year later. And, after 7 years of their happy married life, their first child Malia Ann Obama was born on July 4, 1998. Three years later, they were blessed with their second girl child, Natasha, to which Obama said~
“The great thing about the girls is they’ve got a wonderful role model in their mom….they’ve seen how Michelle and I interact- not only the love but also the respect that I show to their mom.
So I think they have pretty high expectations about how relationships should be, and that gives me some confidence about the future.”
And, then came the year 2004 that transformed this family’s life.
2004: The Year Of Transformation
Obama was elected to the US Senate, and in 2008 he became the 44th President of the USA. From thereon this lovable couple became the power couple and set an example of love, support, and unity for the rest of us.
Each one us knows how Michelle supported Barack throughout his journey as a President. Obama talks about the support he received from Michelle ~
“Obviously I couldn’t have done anything that I’ve done without Michelle…..not only has she been a great first lady, she is just my rock. I count on her in so many ways every single day.”
After the end of Obama’s tenure as a President, they said goodbye to the White House and went back to their life happily.
