Defying social norms when Shikar Dhawan married Ayesha Mukherjee, who had two daughters from her first marriage.
We live in a society, that leaves no chance to judge Single Moms. In such a patriarchal society, it is quite amazing that we have men like Shikhar Dhawan, who are ready to defy society’s regressive thought-process about single moms.
Many admire Shikhar Dhawan for his cricketing career, but even his love story with Ayesha Mukherjee deserves a salute. Here’s Shikhar Dhawan’s unique love story with Bengali beauty Ayesha, who is also the single mom of 2 daughters.
When It All Started
The Internet played cupid in the love-story of Ayesha & Shikhar Dhawan. Cricketer Harbhajan Singh was a mutual friend of Shikhar Dhawan and Ayesha Mukherjee on Facebook. The unique love story started when Shikhar came across Ayesha’s Facebook profile and was bowled over by her looks. Without wasting any more time, Shikhar sent her a friend request which she accepted.
It is quite beautiful how their long Facebook conversations led to a budding friendship. And then with time, friendship turned into love.
A Unique Alliance
But the journey from love to marriage wasn’t easy for our society to accept and celebrate. The reason behind this alliance was about to break so many social norms that our society held close to their heart.
Ayesha was born in India, but her family soon moved to Australia. She is a trained kickboxer and a sports fanatic. Ayesha is not only 10 years older than Shikhar but also a divorcee. She had married an Australian businessman but got divorced later. She has two daughters from her first marriage – Rhea & Aliyah.
Interestingly, the age gap between Shikhar and Ayesha’s elder daughter is around 15 years only. But that did not stop Shikhar from accepting them as his own kids.
But for our conventional society, this wasn’t easy to accept.
Society’s Regressive Mindset
Being unique in nature and breaking all the social norms, this union was subject to many questions. But, Shikhar Dhawan’s mother was very supportive of this match. Before tying the knot, Ayesha made sure that her daughters have a comfortable relationship with Shikhar. But it wasn’t only what Ayesha wanted, but even Shikhar was keen on that. Finally, standing for their love against the social norms, the couple got hitched in 2012.
Shikhar Dhawan and Ayesha Mukherjee had a traditional Sikh wedding. And in 2014, Ayesha and Shikhar were blessed with a baby boy – Zoravar Dhawan. Shikhar has made sure that even when he is not the biological father to his daughters, but he will be a loving and caring father to them.
In fact, Shikhar was once asked in an interview about the difficulties he faced while getting along with both the daughters, and he said:
“It wasn’t difficult at all. Joh cheez kudrat se hoti hai woh ekdum aapki zindagi mein dhal jaati hain. Meri kismet mein thi meri do betiyaan, toh woh ekdum se meri zindagi mein aa gayi. It just clicked. Today, the way they love me, I feel so fortunate.”
In our patriarchal society, there would be very few men in our society who think like Shikhar. We believe as a society, we need to celebrate these role models. We hope many more seek inspiration from this couple and gather the courage to shatter the social norms for creating a life of love and care for themselves.
