It was the year 1986 when Alka Yagnik and her mother had gone to New Delhi by train and Neeraj Kapoor came to receive them at the station early morning. Neeraj is Alka’s mother’s friend’s nephew. While talking about first impressions, Alka once mentioned:
“He came in his pyjamas and my first impression was what kind of guy would do this! Later he told me that his first impression of me was a very glamorous woman alighting perfectly spruce from a train journey despite the early hours.”
This meeting led to the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Post this trip, Alka and Neeraj stayed in constant touch. Neeraj made sure to visit Alka’s residence whenever he visited Mumbai during his work trip. As time passed, their friendship grew. And, after six months of being just a friend, the couple found themselves in love with each other.

After two years of romance and dating each other, the couple decided to commit for life. The year 1988 played a significant role in Alka’s life. It was the year when she received recognition as a singer as her song ‘Ek Do Teen’ became an overnight hit. The same year the duo decided to take things to their families.
When the couple took the decision to get married, the families shared their concerns. One concern was that they belonged to very different career streams and secondly, the physical distance between the two.
The parents not only warned them but also announced that their marriage would be a failure. But, the duo refused to give up on their love. The families finally agreed to their marriage, which happened in February 1989. While Alka used to stay in Mumbai, Neeraj lived in Shillong. The same year, they were blessed with their only daughter Sayesha who stayed with Alka.
25-Year Long-distance Marriage That Many Thought Will Fail
Due to her career choices, Alka had to stay in Mumbai. She had no choice but to be a single mother for the most part of her marriage. Even though she was miles away from Neeraj, he was always in her thoughts.
On multiple occasions, Alka has praised Neeraj for being very understanding of her career demands. Even after being miles apart, the couple put effort to stay as a loving husband & wife. While Neeraj would visit Mumbai at fixed intervals, Alka would spend a month in Shillong every year with family.
About this Alka also mentioned,
“Neeraj even tried to launch a business in Mumbai. But he is this simple small-town guy and he got cheated of a huge sum of money. So I told him that he should go back to Shillong and not let his business there get affected.”
Tough Times Made Their Unconventional Marriage Stronger
With time, the long-distance started taking a toll and issues cropped up. Due to this, the couple never saw each other for almost 4 – 5 years. But in those years, they realized how strong their love was; how attached they were to each other even after being miles apart. They realized that they were inseparable. Alka mentioned that they sat together and reconsidered the terms of marriage again and said,
“The basic bond was always there,” said Alka positively in an interview later.”
While expressing her feelings about the purity of the long-distance marriage, she said,
“I’ll not lie and say that I’ve never got attracted to people. But I didn’t get carried away. My values are strong. I also believe one’s dignity lies in one’s hands. I don’t believe in frivolous behaviour.”
This is the way Alka described her marriage,
“Our marriage can be summed up in the U2 song ‘Can’t live with or without you’. It’s been a difficult marriage to hold on to. But we couldn’t let go of each other.”
