In the midst of the lockdown, when Indian women are struggling with the household chores overload, here’s Sudha Murty’s advice to Indian men which we needed more than ever.

Living in a society where domestic work has always been seen as s woman’s domain, many women are held guilty if they don’t give 100% to the domestic responsibilities. But, who decided that it is women’s job to do the household chores – from cooking to cleaning to laundry to many more?
Lockdown gives many the opportunity to fight the sexist idea that our mothers or daughters or sisters or wives must take care of the domestic chores and keep the household in top shape.
And, in order to break the stereotype, Sudha Murty has recently shared a piece of very important advice for Indian men.
In a recent interview with ET NOW, Sudha touched upon the challenges faced by working mothers amidst the Covid19 crisis and the need to balance books and screen time for children.
When asked about how Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy and she were coping with the lockdown she said,
“This is the longest Murthy & I are locked in at home. We exchange information on the COVID situation and pray that a vaccine should come soon. I am on calls for 4-5 hours a day and actively involved in COVID related work. But we are aged 70-plus so we have lesser demands. We cook rice, dal, chapati, sabji.”

But what touched our heart was when she was asked for a piece of advice for women who are overburdened during the lockdown.
Agreeing to the fact that women are overburdened with the domestic chores, she added that the situation is particularly hard for working moms who have to balance homes, children, and their work.
So, while answering what piece of advice, she would suggest for women, she said:
“With no domestic help, women are cleaning the house, washing the dishes, looking after the children and also they have to work from home. So rather than advising women, I would advise men rather than women. They should participate more in the household activities and share equally. Because it is really really hard time.”
Further, recalling the help she was receiving from Narayan Murthy, one of the leading entrepreneur in India, she said:
“Murthy helps me a lot at home. But, we don’t have young kids. Our life is not as struggling as others with young kids.”

Role Model Of Our Society Â
Sudha Murty has never bowed down to the patriarchal mindset of our society. And, she witnessed it very closely, when she chose to become an engineer. On multiple occasions, she was told that the engineering was a male-dominated domain whereas women’s place was in the kitchen.

At IFORHER, we are in awe of Sudha Murty as she is the role model our patriarchal society needs. Shattering all the patriarchal norms, Sudha Murty has not only created a name for herself but has also given back to society in so many different ways.
While we admire her advice, we hope many Indian men would seek inspiration from the couple and share the domestic work-load during the testing times.
