Pongal is a very famous Hindu festival in south India. It is celebrated in the month of Tai as per the Tamil solar calendar for three days – Bhogi Pongal, Thai Pongal, and Maattu Pongal. Like the North Indian festival Makar Sakranti, Pongal is dedicated to the Sun God.
The festival is named after the ceremonial “Pongal”, which means “to boil, overflow”. This word particularly refers to a traditional dish prepared from the fresh harvest of rice boiled in milk with jaggery or sugar. It is popularly known as kheer across India. The dish is first offered to Gods and then to cows and later to the family members. But, there is something as auspicious as the sweet dish. It is rangoli, also known as Pongal kolam, outside their houses to seek blessings of the gods and goddesses. It attracts good vibes to the house as well.
