Recently Luv Ranjan’s Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar was released on Netflix. And, like all other Luv Ranjan movies, netizens also found this Ranbir-Shraddha starrer also problematic. From calling Luv Ranjan – a women-hater to accusing the movie of the over-glorification of joint families, here’s what the internet had to say.
In the past, Luv Ranjan’s movies such as “Pyaar Ka Punchnama” and “Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety” have been criticized for depicting women as manipulative and controlling, while promoting the idea that men should dominate in relationships. Many people have blamed Luv Ranjan for promoting misogyny in his films and perpetuating harmful gender roles. Once again, the same criticism has been reignited with the OTT release of his latest film – Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar.
Recently, the debate started when a woman called out the Shraddha Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor, and Anubhav Singh Bassi-starrer film for glamourizing the joint family systems. She wrote that ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar’ was disturbing to watch. Taking to Twitter, she wrote: “watched tu jhooti main makkar & realised it’s about glamorising joint family system? they especially took a strong independent woman and made her believe that she will be happy in a joint family system once she gave up her hopes of her own house and independent life???”
She further mentioned, “Some women are okay with joint family system and it’s fine, but taking a character who was ANTI-JOINT FAMILY SYSTEM and changing her mind and putting her in that situation and showing she is now happier was sooooo disturbing”
She added, “Bollywood has never been perfect but i wasn’t expecting seeing anything like that from a film that was supposedly exploring how modern relationships work…It gives men the wrong idea that they can take an independent woman and mold her according to their own expectations. This is not how things work in reality.”
Her tweet went viral in no time. Reacting to the viral tweet, many people shared their thoughts:
Some users took to social media to share how Luv Ranjan doesn’t like women and all his films are just a reminder of the same!
One user wrote, “It took long but glad people are seeing this. but again what did we expect from luv ranjan” Other mentioned, “Luv ranjan HATES women lmao” Someone wrote, “I thought the same Luv Runjan always depicts the heroine’s choices as crime”
But, this isn’t the first time Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar faced criticism. During the release of the movie, many pointed out that the makers made a shameless attempt to objectify Shraddha.
Many netizens shared how not only the song but also the whole movie objectifies women. One user wrote, “Such a weird skimpy outfit for Shraddha. Am i the only one who feels she’s objectified in all her recent songs?” Another user mentioned, “The entire dress has been designed to objectify lol. The color is selected to give an illusion of being naked.”
Someone wrote, “It just feels so male gazy to see her like that. Plus even the dance moves are quite provocative.” Another user mentioned, “Forget songs. Wife and I encountered the trailer for TJMM when we went to see Pathan and about half a minute into it she started counting the bikinis Shraddha wore in it. Out of 16-odd outfits that point onward, only 2 were not bikinis or didn’t have bikini-like tops.”
