Real Story Behind Rani Mukherjee’s Mrs. Chatterjee Vs Norway
A decade ago, the controversial court case between Indian parents and the government of Norway about the custody of their two kids, left the whole world shocked. The whole controversy started in the year 2011. The Norwegian child welfare department, Barnevarne, took Anurup and Sagarika Bhattacharya’s kids – Abhigyan and Aishwarya – into custody and put them with a foster family.
In the heartbreaking incident, the helpless parents Anurup and Sagarika were forced to give up their kids’ custody. At that time, Avigyan was three years old while Aishwarya was just a year old.
Norwegian Authorities Raised Objection At Feeding Kids With Hands
The couple’s ordeal started in May of 2011 when Norwegian authorities raised concerns about Sagarika feeding their newborn daughter with her own hands. Without understanding the Indian context of hand-feeding, Norwegian authorities labeled hand-feeding as force-feeding.
Authorities Raised Objection About Insufficient Space For Kids
The authorities claimed that there was insufficient space for the kids to play. Though the child was allowed to share a bed with his father, the authorities insisted that the little boy should have his own room with a separate bed. The authorities also accused parents of dressing their kids and playing with them in ‘unsuitable’ ways.
After a very long legal battle and a diplomatic spat between the two nations, the Norwegian authorities finally decided that the children’s father’s brother should have their custody. This helped the father to reunite with his kids and bring them back to India.
But, by that time, the relationship between Anurup and Sagarika turned turbulent. The tension between the couple had grown so much that Sagarika had to go to court to regain custody of her kids.

After a very difficult legal battle, Sagarika finally managed to win custody of her kids. In 2013, Kolkata High Court finally granted her custody of Abhigyan and Aishwarya.
In one of her inspiring interviews with NDTV in 2013, Sagarika said, “It’s a huge relief, and I want to convey my regards to my well-wishers…My ordeal is finally over. I cannot express my emotions because I couldn’t meet my children for a long time. I pray to God that children can always stay with me.” In case you haven’t watched the hard-hitting trailer yet, you can watch it here:
