Who exactly is Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, also known as Veer Savarkar?
While sharing the teaser, Randeep Hooda called Veer Savarkar – the most misunderstood unsung hero. He shared, “There are many heroes that have played their part in getting us our Independence. However, not everyone has got their due. Vinayak Damodar Savarkar is the most misunderstood, debated, and influential of these unsung heroes, and his story must be told,”Â
According to the teaser, Savarkar believed that India’s fight for freedom would have been shorter if people had embraced armed revolt against British forces. Veer Savarkar authored the book titled “The Indian War of Independence,” capturing the 1857 revolt against British forces in India. The book faced a ban in British India even before its release as Birtishers considered it highly provocative.
The father of Hindutva
Recognized as the father of Hindutva, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar became a member of the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha. His emphasis was on Hindutva, a term originally coined by the Bengali conservative Chandranath Basu.
Veer Savarkar emphasized Hindutva as a foundational element of Indian culture and identity. One of his most renowned quotes is, “Hindutva is the essence of our culture, the way of life and the world-view that is the life-breath of the nation.”Â
Why was he arrested & taken into custody?
Vinayak Damodar Savarkar faced arrest for his protest against the 1909 Morley-Minto reforms, resulting in a 50-year imprisonment at the infamous Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, commonly known as Kaala Pani. While he regained his freedom in 1924, he had to face many allegations and criticism.
Is he considered a traitor?
In 1921, Savarkar signed a “pardon” agreement with the British, committing to refrain from engaging in politics and revolutionary activities upon his release. While some label him a traitor and a pawn of the British Raj because of these mercy petitions, others argue that his intention was not self-seeking but rather aimed at securing the release of fellow political prisoners.
In his work “My Transportation for Life,” Savarkar penned his thoughts, “Release us, I said, equip India with colonial self-government, and win the loyalty and love of her people. That would assure to the government all the co-operation that it needed from the people in the present crisis. Let it not miss that splendid opportunity. In case the Government suspected, I wrote in conclusion, my motive in writing the letter, I offered to do without any release for myself personally. Let them release all the political prisoners in the country leaving me alone in my own cell in the Andamans. I shall rejoice in their freedom as if it was my own.”
Was he implicated in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi?
In 1948, Savarkar faced charges as a co-conspirator in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. Despite the accusations, he was acquitted by the court due to insufficient evidence.
Given the controversial life of Veer Savarkar, Randeep Hooda’s movie is expected to be a much-awaited biopic of 2024. Are you excited about the movie? Tell us in the comments below.
