Last week, Sudipto Sen’s latest film “The Kerala Story” hit theaters amid several controversies and mixed reviews. Starring Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Sonia Balani, and Siddhi Idnani, the drama has been produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah.
The synopsis of the film by the makers quotes, “A spine-chilling, never told before the true story – revealing a dangerous conspiracy that has been hatched against India.”. Twitter has been buzzing with praises and criticisms alike. Some have claimed that the movie is goosebumps-worthy, while others have accused it of creating religious disruptions and promoting a fake reality. However, that hasn’t stopped the movie from being a massive hit among the audience.
Despite the mixed reactions and controversies, “The Kerala Story” has collected a whopping sum at the box office on its opening weekend, surpassing Vivek Agnihotri’s super-successful movie – The Kashmir Files, which was released last year.
In 3 days since its release, the movie – The Kerala Story has managed to earn Rs 35 Crores. And, do you know, the movie has earned much more than the many movies loaded by superstars and proved to be a true winner at the box office. Yes, in just three days, the movie managed to earn more than the lifetime run of Akshay Kumar’s Selfiee, Ranveer’s Jayeshbhai Jordaar, and Ayushmann’s An Action Hero.
In the midst of endless controversies, the movie has left everyone surprised as it managed a strong hold on weekdays as well. And, now the movie has created a very unique box-office record that no other movie of 2023 has managed to achieve. Yes, a record that neither Shah Rukh Khan’s mega-blockbuster Pathaan nor Salman Khan’s Kisi a Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan was able to achieve.
As per the reports, The Kerala Story managed to earn higher on the first Monday than its opening day. Yes, it’s a one-of-a-kind record that not a single film in 2023 was able to achieve.
Many states including West Bengal, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu have banned the movie from screening in theatres and have called it propaganda. While responding to the criticism, The Kerala Story’s producer and creative director Vipul Amrutlal Shah has recently stated that the film ‘is not against Muslims or Islam’ but rather against terrorists.
In an interview with Rediff, Vipul stressed that The Kerala Story “is not against Muslims or Islam, it’s against terrorists.” He also added, “This film is not against a particular religion or caste. What has been most satisfying is that some people were posting angry, nasty, and abusive messages against the film. Three of them have publicly apologized on the same platform after seeing the film, calling it a fantastic film. That’s a very big vindication or validation of what we have been saying. I’m sure, with time, as temperatures go down, people will understand that this film is not against anyone, it’s against terrorism. And we are appealing to all those who are against terrorism, to join us in our fight.”
