Vikram Vedha draws inspiration from the ancient folktale of Betal Pachisi, which features King Vikramaditya’s pursuit of a wily demon who continuously shares enigmatic stories with the king and escapes once the king solves the riddles. The film takes place in contemporary Lucknow, where Vikram (Saif Ali Khan) is a high-ranking police officer overseeing a specialized team assigned to capture dangerous gangsters. Their primary objective is Vedha (Hrithik Roshan), a mid-level gangster who rapidly climbed the ranks after committing a series of homicides. Vedha, like Betal in the tales, shares a story with the police officer every time he is detained, allowing him to evade capture once again. These stories reveal insights into the past lives of both the criminal and the officer, illustrating how events shaped them into the individuals they are today.

Vikram, a cop known for his itchy trigger finger and black-and-white outlook on life, begins to perceive the world in a new way. He learns that life is full of shades of grey rather than simple black-and-white classifications. Layer by layer, he uncovers past events and realizes that there is no absolute good or evil in his and Vedha’s world. People like them must pick the lesser of two evils and stand by it.

For the unversed, Vikram Vedha is a remake of a Tamil thriller of the same name starring R Madhavan and Vijay Sethupati. While the original movie was a blockbuster at the box office.
