Mary Kom is not only one of the most successful boxers in the world but also a very inspiring mother, wife, and human being. From time to time, she has shared inspiring messages on how husbands could support their wives’ dreams and also on how to raise responsible sons.
Recently, we came across Mary’s another inspiring act that we feel needs to be celebrated and applauded.
In the country, where girls are killed in the womb even before they are born, and mothers are cursed if it’s a baby girl, it is obvious why many couples don’t want to adopt girls. But things are changing because of people like Mary Kom, who adopted a girl child after three biological sons.
The 37-year-old, who is a mother of three adorable sons, wanted a baby girl to complete her family. And Mary’s prayers were finally answered. While talking to Deccan Chronicle, Mary Kom recollected the details of when she adopted her daughter:
“When we were talking about adopting a girl, Merilyn came into our lives. On November 26th, 2018, two good things happened to me. The first, I won gold at the World Championships in Delhi and the second, Merilyn came into my life. When I was standing on the podium with tears, I was waiting to hold my little girl. Now, I can say my family is complete,”
Last year, Mary Kom took to social media to share how she was missing her daughter:
You are very special to me and for @OnlerK my love Neivar Merilyn Kom, mama miss you a lot #MotherDaughter #motherhood #BetiBachaoBetiPadhao pic.twitter.com/fz5mV8fvrm

Many netizens came forward to applaud Mary Kom and her husband for inspiring others:

In a country where girls are seen as a liability and being abandoned at a young age, we need more people like Mary Kom and her husband Onler Kom. Other than Mary Kom, many women – Sakshi Tanwar, Sushmita Sen, Raveena Tandon, Sunny Leone, Mandira Bedi – have also adopted daughters. A few months back, Shefali also shared her desire to adopt a baby girl.Â
At IFORHER, we congratulate Mary Kom and her family as they embark on a new journey of parenthood. We hope their actions will inspire more men and women to come forward to adopt kids and give them another chance at life.
