In our country, daughters are still seen as a liability. But here is a powerful message that Sukhbir Malik, father of Olympic medallist Sakshi Malik, shared with fathers in Harayana.
In 2019, Sukhbir Malik, father of Olympic medallist Sakshi Malik, put out a video message for fathers on National Daughter’s Day. In this heart-touching video, he makes an emotional appeal to all fathers to support their daughters and fight for their dreams.
The video captured the powerful message in Hindi that said,
“I’m writing to you, because a few years ago, I was in the same dilemma that you were in, about how to deal with my daughter’s dream… Don’t pay attention to her dream, no matter how much she pleads, don’t bother.
Because, if you do, life as you know will completely change.
First of all, she won’t listen to you anymore. She will spend money unnecessarily on (you and your home). She will make you rid of your old clothes. And, then will buy new ones for you.
She will forget that your home is only yours and she is just Paraya dhan. Without asking you, she will spend money on house and get it repaired.
And, doesn’t matter how many times you refuse, she will take you to the biggest hospital for your treatment, even if it is mere cold and flu.
(If you let her follow her dreams), then there would be so much difficulty in the marriage aswell. Because, there would be so many grooms seeking her hand.
And, doesn’t matter how much name and fame you would have earned, if you trust her dreams, you will be known by her name as I am.
I never had enough courage to crush my daughter’s dream. And, I hope, after reading my letter, you will not be able to, too.
Your well wisher,
Swati Malik Ka Bapu
Belonging to a rural part of Haryana, Sukhbir, a former bus conductor, left no stone unturned in helping his daughter to pursue her dream. He didn’t only let her pursue a career in sports, but also helped her in transforming that dream into a reality.
The way he stood by his daughter against all odds, he hopes that other fathers too. They will also give the support to their daughters as they deserve.
In 2016 Rio Olympics, Sakshi made history after winning the bronze medal in wrestling. Without her parents’ support, it would have been impossible for Sakshi to achieve such an inspiring milestone in her career.
